What's going on ?

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I know it's been a few
months since I entered anything here, so I might have to start backwards.
I have just been recovering
from a nasty virus that had me coughing so hard it hurt. I also stupidly hurt
my knee while dancing at a birthday party for
three local friends. That'll
never happen again. My dancing days are over, I'm not kidding! (I attempted the
splits. It ended badly).
The band is rehearsing tonight for the first time in a
month, without the bass player, who isn't back from a family emergency. The
house is so cold, too.
All I feel like doing in these dark winter months is sit
in front of the fireplace with a blanket. Maybe one of these days we'll be
moving to a warmer climate.
There has been a lot of
good music and new friends made, like the Mike Steed Band, who played a great
set at the San Gregorio Store last month.
They invited Jack to open for them at
the Bistro the following week, and that was a lot of fun. That day, though, I
had to take a class to renew my Notary
commission, and it was terrible! The
instructor was a moron, and it lasted ALL DAY. The test was easy, and I passed.
Yes, I do Notary work as a side job
when I'm not touring Europe
and the States promoting my wildly successful music. (Heehee).
I have a few new shows
coming up, and that's a good thing. After the summer was over, we had nothing
booked! It was a little discouraging.
And it's hard to regain the momentum once
the gigs are over. But here we go, and it will be fun!
See ya later!

The first week back from
two weeks off the old day job really sucks! This can't be reality.....
So, we've been in an
alternate universe for a bit, with a lot of music, fun, friends, and traveling.
We went once again to see Gordon Lightfoot,
and the shows were great, as well
as hanging out with the band and their other friends after the shows. There's
just nothing like a Gordon Lightfoot show!
After all these years, he still has
the energy and motivation to play music....hmmmm.
Then we went to Virginia City, Nevada
for a couple of days, met our friends there and had a great jam at the
Ponderosa Saloon. It is always hard to leave there,
but we needed to head South
to the LA area for the shows we did in Brea.
We did go to vegas for about an hour to see the Elvis-A Rama Museum. It's going
to
be moving to Honolulu
in October. There we met Cynthia Pepper, an actress who worked with Elvis in
"Kissin Cousins". She was very nice.
After that we headed to
Southern Cal, where we met Greg Patton, from Brea,
and Sonia Milan, from Italy.
Together they are called "Ameritalian", a
singer-songwriter duo.
Fantastic guitar playing and wonderful harmonies. They are very nice people,
too! They also had two back-up singers, Linda and Amy who
have very beautiful
voices, and a guitar player named Jay.
We played a theater there for two
nights, and really fell in love with the area, so much so that we didn't want
to go home. Especially after the long drive, stuck in
traffic. Getting home to
the cold summer weather..... we need to move.

Let the fun begin! Our San
Gregorio Store show went very well! It was our first time playing the afternoon
slot, so the pressure was on to have a crowd, and we
really did! Of course,it
helped that the weather was extremely hot, so many people had to go towards the
coast just to escape the opressive heat,
but still, we had a great time and an appreciative audience.
The next day, we had to go again, to escape the heat and
to check out the bellydancers that were performing that afternoon. What an
interesting show! It was
actually surreal, in a way, because this is a rural
area kinda in the middle of nowhere, and the scenery around there is like
something out of a pastoral fairy tale, so to
see Mediterranean dancers there
was a step outside the box! Had a good time there, too!
Then the fun really began!
I got a call from a friend and singer who was doing a show involving some
players from Moby Grape and the Jefferson Airplane, and Bob
harvey, the
original bass player for the Airplane was doing a TV show: The Bruce Latimer
Show in Pacifica on a community TV station, and wanted to know if I
would join
him and another player, John Mork, at the show. This was Monday, and the show
was Wednesday evening, so I said, OK, let's get together and
rehearse a little.
It went famously well, we had a great time, and I can say that about the show
experience too. Bob will be coming back, hopefully soon, to do a
reunion show
with Moby Grape, and he wants me and John to be his band called
"San
Francisco Blue", a band he founded years ago before he decided to move to Georgia. His
East Coast band is called Georgia Blue, and you can find their CD's on
CD Baby,
and they have a My Space account too. Bob was a sweetheart, and loves playing
music, like me, and we got along great. The show was a success, and I'll
be
getting a copy of the dvd as soon as they send me one. So, many great things
are happening, for the band, for me personally,
and for the people closest to
me......
I do love my life!

This was the 'summer tour'
weekend! My daughter and I played a small festival in Loma Mar, a little town
in the redwoods, on Saturday. We opened the show for them, played several songs
perfectly (how did that happen?) and had to leave to go to the La Honda Faire
to hear the Jack Mullins Band. I did have time to sit in for a couple of songs
with Dan Wills, however.
The sound on that stage was the best I've ever
experienced. It really makes a difference in my performance when it sounds good
to me.... then we played at the Gazos Grill from 6 to 8pm,
and that was a lot
of fun too. We're blending together better every time...
Jack's band was great! The
La Honda Faire is a special weekend of music, art and crafts, and just a great
community party in the sun. I love La Honda for that.
I saw a friend wearing a
really cool dress, so she took me to the booth where she bought it, I found
another one in a different color, she really had wanted that color but couldn't
find her size.
I said "Let me wear it to my show tomorrow, then we'll
trade". So, I wore it Sunday with the band, we played, I was a little
nervous-don't know why- but we got through the set without
too much trouble,
and it was a success all-around. A photographer for the San Mateo Times was
taking pictures, so he got our names after we played...my bass player, Larry,
was unable
to be there, so we got our friend Rob to fill in for the show. 2
rehearsals, he was great! OK, then my friend and I traded dresses, freaked
everybody out, then my sister came and bought
another dress just like ours,
different color. During the David Elias set, the three of us got up and danced,
and it looked like part of the show because we were dressed alike. Someone
took
some pictures.... I'll post them when I get them.
Now it's Monday, and I
bought a paper to see if we made it into the news, and SURE ENOUGH!! There's a
close up of Rob, the bass player, and nobody else! At least they mentioned
the
Lisa Kelly Band....
Rob's going to be so
stoked! First time on stage with us, and he gets in the paper!
I would so love to play music and not much else, it
was so much fun!

I spent the weekend being a little bit productive
doing yard work and washed the cars, which, by the way, looked worse after the
washing than before. The weather was sunny and warm,
just like summer! We don't
get much of that in this area, close to the ocean. It stays pretty cool most of
the time. Sunday I went to see my new local favorite band, the
Atkinson-Kincheloe Band
at the San Gregorio General Store. They are a
singer/sonwriter trio and I love their music and harmonies. Very inspiring! Lisa
Atkinson has a radio show, and she said she played my cd on her
show. How very
cool!! Radio airplay! Then Jack played at Gazos Grill, the venue with a menu,
and did really well. Sold a cd too.
Another cool place I was introduced to is
www.mixposure.com, a band page for submitting music which then gets reviewed and
rated. My two submitted songs are currently on the weekly
folk charts at numbers
3 and 4, and on the monthly chart at numbers 8 and 10. Now, if I can only figure
how to get some more songs up there.....
My niece, Alicia, has a couple of songs up there too
in the new age category, and she is doing very well. Too bad she moved back to
Kauai.
Friday night we sat in with our friends the Falling
Stars at the Mountain House, and ended up staying a bit late....it's always so
much fun there, especially when lots of people are there.
A couple of cowboys
rode in on horses, too, and when they were leaving, I helped one of them put the
bit back on his horse, who was having none of it.
I started writing another song, and wanted to see
what I could do with the music, but instead found an unfinished song from months
ago and finished it instead. Ha! The muse is waking up, I
hope.
Later!!

Happy Birthday, Jack!!
I made a cheesecake just for you. And I'm bringing
home a small present, to hold you over til you tell me what you actually really
want. OK.
So, Here's the thing. Things are starting to happen,
and I feel a bit overwhelmed by it, and at the same time, very excited. I'll
have to wait until everything is confirmed, but it's possible that I'll
be doing
some traveling, all over the country, to do some music. Details will be
forthcoming.
I have recently discovered (gotten hooked on)
MySpace.com. It is so cool, to meet new people and find old friends. The Bangles
actually signed my page (they sign everyone's
though)....
Chicken parmesian for dinner tonight,
yummmm....

Sunday was a very special day! My daughter and I
played together at a gig at the Gazos Grill, which is a nice little diner on the
coast highway between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay.
The new owners are great, and the
menu is fantastic. The bar area is large and warm, and the acoustics are great
too. Plus, there is a panoramic view of the ocean outside the huge window.
Great
place to watch the sunset, have a glass of wine, and listen to live acoustic
music. We had a good audience, including family and friends, but some passersby
also who were from
out of state and just stopped in for a bite to eat and were
nicely surprised to get to hear some music too. We got up there and did a couple
of songs together, and I was blown away by
my daughter's voice and the way our
voices blended. It was like having two of me up there! She did some familiar
songs and one of her own, I did some of mine, and it was so much fun!
Then we
took a break, and I invited my niece, Alicia Lyons, who just recently moved back
here from Kauai, do a couple of songs. She was
really great too! Then Jack did a couple,
and Andrea and I got back up there and
finished up. We have been invited back in June for another, and we also will be
playing at a private party this weekend.....
What a fun time we
had!
February 22, 2006
I'm certainly ready for Spring. It's been very cold
around here.....
Last night we played at The Bistro in Hayward, a nice little pub
that has music every night. I really hope they have us back, because it turned
out to be a fun evening. After the first set
I was afraid we wouldn't have an
audience to speak of, because it was Tuesday night and nobody knows us over
there....but my daughter, niece, and friend showed up and suddenly
the place was
full! It really helps the vibe to have an audience, and I really enjoy playing
for people, even if I can't for the life of me play a perfect show! I wonder if
it has anything to
do with my day job. I have decided to start setting more time
aside to practice and write, and learn more songs. The laundry can
wait.....
So, one of the best moments last night was when
Andrea got up there and we did a duet of "Down By The Schoolyard". It was her
very first time performing on stage, and she was
very good! The audience liked
it too. She'll be joining me for the Gazos Grill show on March 12th, and I can't
wait!
